A french drain is a trench that is at least one foot
wide and of various depths. It is either lined with a geo-textile
fabric or having a fabric filter sock on the pipe. This will collect
water from low areas.
Here is an example of a french drain
with the filter fabric sock on the pipe.
The trench must be excavated properly in order to gravity flow water.
Here is a classic french drain where the trench
is lined with a geo-filter fabric and the pipe
is encased in gravel.
Some french drains are left with gravel exposed
(the landscaper hasn't added the decorative rock yet)
or can be sodded over.
